Three killed in Dar es Salaam road horror

Story by Daily news paper;
THREE people died on the spot and four others were seriously injured in a grisly accident that occurred at Ubungo area in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

An oil tanker with registration number T 269 BRQ, pulling a trailer number T264 BUT, property of Dalbit Petroleum Company skidded from its lane at River Side bus stand and killed three people standing on the road side. It also rammed into cars that were in a traffic jam.

According to an eye witness, Mr Emmanuel Masongo of Ubungo River Side, the petrol tanker was trying to avoid hitting a parked commuter bus at a bus stand.

"I think the lorry was trying to avoid ramming into a daladala wrongly parked at the bus stand. It swayed to the right lane but ended up crashing vehicles coming from the opposite direction," said Masongo, adding that the speeding oil tanker was heading to Buguruni from Ubungo.

The witness said a pregnant woman and two petty traders were involved in the accident.

"The woman was waiting to cross the road - her head was severed, it was awful," said the eyewitness.

The 'Daily News' witnessed the police, fire fighters and members of the public helping to collect the remains of the woman and the two petty traders from the scene of accident.

Confirming the accident, the Kinondoni Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Charles Kenyela, described it as horrifying.

"It is a terrible accident, Kinondoni Region has never witnessed this before...drivers should be very careful," he said and added that poor road infrastructure was a major cause of such accidents.

He said the deceased were taken to Amana Hospital Mortuary while the injured were taken to Amana and Mwananyamala hospitals.

According to Mr Kenyela, seven vehicles were involved in the accident and three were badly damaged. He said the police will investigate the cause of the accident.

Passengers and drivers of the damaged vehicles miraculously came out alive. The driver of the lorry disappeared after the accident.

Said Sadick, a driver whose vehicle was involved in the accident, deplored the manner in which authorities responded to the accident, saying it took too long for them to arrive.

The fire brigade arrived at the scene at 1:50 pm, about 45 minutes after the accident occurred.

There was confusion at the accident scene as people jammed the area and cars formed a heavy traffic jam.

Meanwhile, FREDY NYALUCHI reports that a woman was electrocuted after touching a saucepan on an electric cooker.

The Kinondoni RPC, Mr Charles Kenyela, said on Wednesday that the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Bunju A, in Dar es Salaam.

He said a house owner, Tione Ali, 32, a resident of Bunju A identified the dead as his tenant Nuru Rajab estimated to be between 25-30 years.

In another development, RPC Kenyela said that fire had gutted a five-roomed house at Mwananyamala belonging to Grace Hayeshi, 50.
