One of my favorite creepy folk tales is the story of Baba Yaga, a witch who flies through the air in a kettle looking for small children. She lives in a cabin on chicken legs surrounded by a fence made of skulls. The version of Baba Yaga that I first read comes from "Whistle in the Graveyard: Folktales to Chill Your Bones" by Maria Leach (my favorite book of scary short stories).
