TWO days after a fire gutted Mwanjelwa Main Market at Sido area in Mbeya, another fire has erupted at Forest Market, Mbeya Region destroying nine business stalls whose value has not been established.
According to eye-witnesses, the fire erupted on Sunday night at around 3am and was put out by neighbours, fire brigade, including the Mbeya District Commissioner at around 4 am. The fire was detected by security men, guarding the market who later informed other people including security men from Grace College, nearing the market. Speaking to reporters, the Chairman of the Market, Mr Nadhil Mussa, said only nine stalls were destroyed by fire.
He thanked the Mbeya District Commissioner for joining the neighbours in putting off the fire. Mr Mussa said that there were no casualties reported nor property destroyed. The Forest Market is the third to be destroyed by fire after Mwanjelwa Market commonly known as Sido Market was razed. More than 1300 stalls were destroyed. The market was temporarily established after the main market, Mwanjelwa, was reduced to ashes in 2006.
